CHAPTER 16. THE ARBOR DEAL

. . .253 pounds. . .

Ivy, treading lightly up down the aisle of the plane, handing out itinerary folders to the passengers was exhilarated. 253 on her scale at 6 a.m. wasn’t something to celebrate but every pound down brought her closer to sweet realm of normal, and Evan. He’d given her his favorite book to read on the trip. They’d made a date for Sunday when she’d be back in town.

Precisely on schedule, at 8:05 a.m. Monday, the 15th of May, the Michigan Mutual team was in the jet Fieffer Travel Services had chartered. Exactly as planned, they were on their way to the first out-of-town presentation of the Arbor Project. Each meeting, each day’s activities was detailed in the “From the Desk of Ivy G.M. Morley” memos in the handsome leather itinerary folder which Evan had helped her put together.

“Well look looky here! My name in gold letters,” Frank the President exclaimed, and right away others echoed him, joking about the fancy folders as Ivy handed one to each person in the cabin. Everyone, including the imposing Alexander Vanoff, Executive Director of the Children’s Services Network, was suddenly behaving like the kids at the concerts and museums. Encouraged by Evan saying “go with your instincts,” she’d spent her own money on the deluxe folders. She wanted the selling of the Arbor project to be an exciting major effort, not because it was a money-maker for the bank, but because the health center was such a great big beautiful idea.

The meetings May 15 – 19 in Flint, in Kalamazoo May 22 – 26, in Grand Rapids May 31 – June 3, and Lansing June 5 – 9, were in familiar offices, banks which were already part of the federation. The resumes of the local bank executives were in the memo. Everyone’s personal schedule conflicts were ironed out, but Ivy realized that could change in a minute.

Frank, laughing, feeding wife Helena her second Bloody Mary, was working extra hard at pleasing her, and Helena was notorious for changing plans.

Marvin, who flew by the seat of his pants in business as well as love, was taunting Vera in the seat next to him, teasing Olea across the aisle. He’d skipped the last city council meeting and had asked Olea to sign in for him at the next meeting. Olea was protesting, “Please, don’t ask me to do that, Mr. Greene. The meetings are for elected officials only. Major decisions are going to be made about the homeless and the school system.”

“Vera did it for years, didn’t you Vera?” said Marvin, catching Ivy’s eyes and sending her a grin. “Next time we’ll get Ivy to sign in for me. She loves what I’m doing with the city’s underprivileged, right Ivy?”

Stifling her aggravation, Ivy turned on the overhead light and opened Evan’s “Of Time and the River.” Staring at page one, she pictured Evan listening to the CD of La Bohème, which she’d lent him. He’d said, “Don’t know
